Slow growing succulent species. Globular cactus up to 8 cm tall and 9 cm in diameter. Stems made up of 8-9 ribs equipped with numerous areoles from which 8-9 slightly curved whitish spines develop. The cephalium already appears in relatively young specimens and is essentially a subcylindrical structure covered by reddish bristles and on which the pink flowers develop. When cephalium appears, the plant stops growing and no longer needs to be repotted. Native species of the northern part of Cuba (provinces of Matanzas and Las Villas). In nature it grows in coastal scrub on serpentine outcrops among low xerophytic vegetation. In the wild it is at great risk of extinction due to the excessive exploitation of its natural habitat. It requires very well-drained soil and a semi-shaded position. Water every 10-20 days but leave dry in winter. Not hardy.
