A climbing plant with annual, twining herbaceous stems and tuberous roots. Trifoliate leaves with ovate lobes. Dark red, scented papilionaceous flowers are clustered in axillary inflorescences. The tuberous roots, rounded and slightly knobbly, are edible and consumed like potatoes. Native to North America, the plant prefers loose, deep, and well-fertilized soil. Hardy, deciduous in winter. Plant in a 16 cm diameter pot.
