The only stapeliine found in European flora. Its stems are square, long, and stoloniferous, with prominent tubercles and a cerulean green color. The flowers appear in clusters of 3-10 at the apex of the stems. The flowers are very showy: they are star-shaped, light cream in color with radial red-brown bands. In nature, it grows on dry limestone cliffs or among rocks. It requires well-drained soil and a location in partial shade. Since it produces numerous underground stolons, it is best to choose a bowl rather than a pot so that the plant can develop optimally. Water every 10-15 days in summer but only once or twice a month in winter. Not hardy. Plant in a pot or bare-root.
