Species with fleshy roots that develop from a short rhizome.

Ribbon-like leaves up to 50 cm long by 2 cm wide, evergreen. Floral scapes very dark in color, almost black, more than 1 m long, bearing at the apex a dense spherical umbel of dark blue flowers. Flowering occurs in summer and lasts for about a month.

The species is native from Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal where it grows on various types of soil: sandy, clayey and stony soils. Very rustic species, it needs a sunny or semi-shaded position but adapts to all types of soil (except those that are constantly humid). It adapts well to the Mediterranean climate.
