Bulbous species in winter rest. Rhizomatous, globular bulb with short neck. Leaves developing after the anthesis, 60 cm long by 3,8 cm broad, reddish at the base. Sturdy floral stem, 30-50 cm long, reddish at the base, bearing at the apex 2-4 bell-shaped flowers with a diameter of 15-16 cm, red with a white base. Species with wide geographical distribution (from Mexico to Brazil and Bolivia). In the wild it grows in grasslands but has become rare due to intensive agriculture. It is also one of the first species to be used to produce modern Hippeastrum hybrids. It requires humus-rich but well-drained soil and a sunny or semi-shaded position.
