A clumping succulent species.

Distichous leaves, up to 30 cm long, thin, rough, and glaucous green. Tubular flowers with a spherical base, reddish-pink in long, erect inflorescences.

A species endemic to the lower Kouga River, now part of the Kouga Dam, in the south-eastern Cape Province (South Africa). In the wild, it grows in rugged, inhospitable terrain, on steep or vertical rocky ledges, south-facing but slightly shaded (altitude 500–700 m), in mineral-poor, slightly acidic quartzitic sandstone soils with a pH of 6.4. The climate is hot in summer and mild in winter, without frost. Annual rainfall is 300–400 mm in summer, with a tendency to dryness in winter.

It requires very well-drained soil and a location in partial shade. Water once every 7-20 days in summer but leave dry (or almost dry) in winter.

Not hardy.

Slightly branched, bare-root plant.
