An evergreen bulbous species.

Sadoxus membranaceus is the smallest of the known Scadoxus species, entirely evergreen and low-growing, reaching a maximum height of 40 cm. This species is known for its large, reddish-green spathes surrounding the flowers with red-orange stamens, giving the inflorescence the appearance of a large flower. The bulb is not very large, but produces numerous, robust, fleshy roots. Each bulb also produces 4-5 dark green, lanceolate leaves, 10-15 cm long, with an 8-15 cm petiole, and does not form a pseudostem.

Sadoxus membranaceus is native to South Africa and is found in the coastal forests of the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. It grows in partial or deep shade among rocks, along riverbanks, and in dunes overlooking the sea.

It prefers a shady, semi-shaded, or filtered location. It requires well-drained soil, even sandy soil. Water abundantly and frequently in summer, while less frequently in winter. It never goes dormant.

Not hardy.

Plant in a 14 cm diameter pot or bare-root.
