Funnel-shaped red flowers with slightly wavy tepals are borne on a slender, 30 cm long flower stalk. The flowers are delicately scented and are produced from late summer to autumn.
Cyrtanthus sanguineus is native to South Africa and is widespread in the Eastern Cape provinces, KwaZulu-Natal, Kenya, Tanzania, and Sudan. It grows from the coast up to 600 m above sea level, generally near watercourses or on south-facing rocky slopes and in rock crevices.
It prefers very well-drained soil and a sunny or partially shaded location. Watering is regular in summer, but reduced or absent in winter. In winter, the plant is dormant and does not require watering.
Semi-hardy: it can tolerate temperatures down to 0 degrees Celsius.
