Herbaceous perennial with a winter dormancy.

A Eurasian species also found in Italy. It prefers moist, shady areas (but in the mountains it can also be found in full sun) such as wet meadows, sparse woodlands, etc., from hillsides to mountains.

It produces a rosette of basal leaves similar to those of the Aquilegia, pinnately divided with rounded leaflets. The basal leaves disappear when it blooms. The rounded, feathery flowers are borne on long, branched scapes and appear in spring and summer. In winter, the plant generally goes dormant, resprouting in spring.

It requires fertile, humus-rich soil and a shady or partial shade location (even full sun in the mountains). It can also be used in humid areas or the edges of ponds and lakes. Water only when necessary (for example, in the event of a prolonged drought).

Perfectly hardy.

Potted plant.
