Succulent species with a large range including Mexico (Chihuahua), the central and western United States and southern Canada.
Creeping species forming dense tufts even 2 or 3 m wide. Sub-rounded cladodes with a diameter of about 10 cm with numerous 2-5 cm long whitish spines. Flowers in summer, yellow-orange, very showy. Sub-cylindrical reddish fruits follow.
In nature, the plant grows in desert and sub-desert areas between 200 and 2400 m asl.
Sunny or semi-shaded position and well-drained soil. Very rustic species (in the nursery it holds up to -5°C without problems) and tolerates abundant winter rains without problems.
Bare root plant with one or more cladodes.
