Small succulent species with tuberized roots, forming compact tufts up to 2 m wide.

Sub-rounded cladodes 5-8 cm in diameter with numerous greyish-white spines 2-3 cm long produced only in the upper part of the cladodium. Flowers in summer, showy, lemon yellow in color.

Native to the Midwest, southwestern United States and northern Mexico where it grows between 800 and 2200 m asl. It grows in desert and sub-desert areas on loamy or rocky soils, but also under shrubs and in Yucca grasslands.

It therefore prefers a sunny or semi-shaded position and well-drained soil. Very hardy species (can withstand temperatures up to -20°C), it also tolerates abundant winter rains well.

Bare root plant with one or more cladodes.
