Species native to southern Africa (from Cape Province to southern Lesotho). Stems subclaved, toothed, creeping. Star-shaped, dark purple flowers about 2.5 cm in diameter, with fully flexed lobes along their entire central axis. In the wild it grows in the arid and semi-arid Karoo in summer rains, in rocky areas, between rocks and in the cracks between large boulders, often under the shade of shrubs or in the grass. Well-drained soil and partial shade. Water once every 7-20 days from March to October. Not hardy. Rooted cutting with a single or slightly branched stem.
