Bulbous species winter domant. Ovoid bulb with a diameter of 5-7 cm, rather deep compared to the ground level. Ribbon-like leaves that begin to develop at the anthesis. Floral stem 50-60 cm long, bearing at the apex 4-6 zygomorphic flowers 11 cm wide by 17 cm long. The flowers are very particular and unusual because the tepals, long and thin, are curved outwards and have the margin folded inwards. The color varies from more or less intense red to green with a red base. Native species of northwestern Argentina and Bolivia. In nature it grows in very arid and hot areas, where the scarce rainfall (350 mm per year) is concentrated in the three summer months (the rest of the year is spent in vegetative rest) on rocky and clayey soils, between cacti or under shrubs . It therefore prefers a very well drained soil and watering every 10-15 days only in summer. In winter must remain completely dry. Position in full sun or partial shade. Not hardy. 1 bulb 2-3 cm in diameter.
