Succulent species with tuberous roots. Dichotomously branched stems 5-10 cm long. Green or more or less reddened leaves with a red underside, up to 2 cm long. At the base of the leaves there are bristly white hairs. Pink-violet flowers, large and very showy but short-lived. Native to southern Africa (Cape Province, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal). In nature, it grows on rocky slopes, in sparse woodland and on barren or sparsely vegetated plains, in gravelly soils or between rocks. It prefers a position in full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Water every 10-15 days in summer but only once a month in winter. Half-hardy. Unbranched or little branched plant with bare root.
