Terrestrial or epiphytic cactus with sarmentose stems. Stems with a triangular section, very long, tending to climb thanks to robust adventitious roots. Sparse and very short thorns (1-3 cm). Large and showy flowers with a diameter of 30 cm, scented, white with green external sepals. The flowers open during the night. If pollinated, they can produce large ovoid and scaly pink fruits with white pulp and black seeds. The fruits are edible and highly sought after. Only plants that benefit from cross-pollination can produce fruits since the individual plants are self-sterile. The exact place of origin of this species is unknown since it has been present in cultivation for a long time but it is thought that it comes from Central America where the Native Americans already used their fruits. It requires a semi-shaded position (shaded if it is very hot) and well-drained soil. Water once or twice a week in summer but only once or twice in winter. Not hardy. Stem cutting, bare root plant or potted plant.
