Small clumping globose cactus. Stems sub-globose, depressed, with a diameter of approximately 7 cm. The stems are densely covered by numerous thin white thorns so the green of the underlying stem is almost invisible. The plant produces, at the base of the stems, numerous flowers, rather large compared to the stem, of an intense red colour. Flowering occurs in spring but, sometimes, it can also bloom again in summer. Native species of the desert and sub-desert areas of the Argentine province of Salta. It requires very well-drained soil and a position in full sun or partial shade. Water every 10-15 days in summer but leave dry in winter. Hardy up to -4°C.
