Summer-growing bulbous species. Ribbon-like leaves up to 2.5 cm wide. Flowering scape up to 30 cm long bearing 2-4 flowers with a diameter of 10 cm, red-orange in color, crossed by thin longitudinal lines slightly darker and a green throat. Native species of eastern and southern Brazil where it grows in thickets and under shrubs. Requires a shaded position and a well-drained substrate. Regular watering in summer, but absent in winter. The bulb, even when young, tends to produce many bulbils, quickly bunching. Not hardy. Bulb with a diameter of 1.5-3 cm.
