A caudiciform species that is deciduous in winter. This particular species produces a semi-buried caudex of a more or less elongated hemispherical shape. The caudex is covered by a sort of suberous bark which, as the caudex grows, cracks forming longitudinal dimples. The stems are annual, fickle, and can reach several meters in height in a single season. The large, ovate leaves are covered with a soft down. The star-shaped, axillary flowers, in groups of 2 or 3, are reddish-brown in color and are produced in summer-autumn. Species with a large distribution range in western Mexico, from Jalisco (in the north) through Oaxaca and Guerrero to Chiapas (in the south). In nature, it grows in tropical deciduous forests and in subdeciduous ones in the shade of rocks and fallen trunks between 500 and 1000 m. It also grows on limestone cliffs and volcanic rocks. It prefers well-drained soil and a partial shade location. Not hardy. Water once a week in summer and once a month in winter. A 3 year old bare root seedling.
