Achimenes longiflora

Rhizomatous species deciduous in winter. Stems erect or semi-pendulous up to 45 cm tall. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, up to 15 cm long, toothed on the margin, glossy, slightly hairy. Flowers are axillary, pendulous, up to 4.5 cm long, funnel-shaped, purple in color with white throat. Native species of Central Mexico and Central America. In nature it grows in the humid and shady areas of the mountain forests. Slightly drained soil and shaded position. Regular and abundant watering in summer but scarce in winter. In summer never let the soil dry completely otherwise the plant blocks its development compromising flowering. In winter never let the soil dry out completely even if the plant is in vegetative rest otherwise the rhizomes risk becoming excessively dehydrated. Not hardy. Plant in 14 cm pot or 10 rhizomes.
