Kohleria hirsuta var. hirsuta (Kohleria eriantha)

Rhizomatous species usually evergreen. Stems erect, up to 50 cm long, pubescent, reddish. Leaves ovate, toothed on the margin, with red border when young. The flowers, produced in large quantities during the summer, are tubular, semi-pendulous, red with a white throat. Native species of tropical America where it grows in mountain forests. Requires well-drained soil and a partially shaded location. Regular watering in summer, less watering in winter. Not hardy. Plant in a 16 cm pot or 6 rhizomes.
