Rhizomatous species with winter rest. Cylindrical, scaly, whitish rhizomes. Stems up to 1 m long, erect or semi-pendulous, covered with dense purple hair. Leaves ovate-lanceolate, serrated on the margin, intense purple in color, pubescent on the lower surface. Semi-pendulous, swollen, hairy, pink flowers with green lobes streaked with black. The species is native to the humid forests of Guyana, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. The rains in nature are seasonal and are concentrated in the summer months so in winter the species goes into vegetative rest, drying out the aerial part. It therefore prefers regular and abundant watering in summer but little in winter (once a month is enough). Shaded position and slightly drained soil. Not hardy. Non rustica. Plant in a 14 cm pot.
