Achimenes x hybrida 'Pulchella'

A summer-growing rhizomatous horticultural hybrid. Erect, slightly hairy stems, up to 30 cm tall. Ovate, dark green leaves with serrated margins and reddish undersides. Axillary, funnel-shaped flowers, purple with a yellow throat, appear early, abundant, and long-lasting. In late autumn, the stems dry up and fall. Requires well-drained soil and a shady location. Water generously during the summer, but only once a month in winter when the plant is dormant. Not hardy: it can tolerate temperatures near freezing, but below that, the rhizomes freeze. Seven rhizomes or potted plant, depending on the season.
