Winter-growing bulbous species.
Unusual bulb with coin-like flattened corms, growing on top of each other. Ribbon-like leaves up to 40 cm long. Flowers in spring of 3 cm of diameter, made up of 5 brown-purple tepals with a strongly curled edge of a greenish colour. The flowers develop on branched fan-shaped inflorescences.
Native species of the Cape Province (Namaquland and Little Karoo) where it is rather widespread but mainly coastal and grows on sandstone or granite rocks.
It requires well-drained soil (even stony or rocky) and a position in full sun or partial shade. Mediterranean cycle species, grows in winter and goes into vegetative rest in summer. In summer it should be left dry until autumn.
Half-hardy.
