A geophytic species with creeping rhizomes and fleshy roots.
A small species (perhaps the smallest of the Hosta species) with leaves that can reach a maximum of 20 cm in height, with a blade 10-15 cm long. The flowers are slightly taller than the leaves and are purple with light white streaks inside the tepals; they are bell-shaped and appear between May and July. The plant forms dense clumps, making its flowers generally very showy.
This species originates from the forests and woodlands of Japan and Korea, where it also grows among rocks.
It therefore requires a fairly shady or partial shade location and slightly drained soil. During the growing season, it must be watered frequently and abundantly.
A very hardy species (at least down to -30 degrees Celsius).
Bare-root plant.
