Herbaceous species with edible rhizomes.

Herbaceous stems over 1 m long, deciduous in winter. Leaves lanceolate, toothed on the margin. Small, pinkish-white, bilabiate flowers, arranged in whorls in the axils of the apical leaves. The rhizomes, more or less elongated, sub-cylindrical and white in color, are edible and can be eaten like potatoes. The plant is very productive but it is advisable not to plant it in the ground to prevent it from becoming a weed.

It prefers moist and well fertilized soils and a position in full sun or partial shade. In summer it requires frequent and abundant watering.

Hardy.

Native species of South-East Asia where it grows on the banks of watercourses and in marshy places and where it is widely cultivated for food purposes.

5 rhizomes.
